biography

Rhonda Browne's dedication to her craft has already led her to attain impressive accolades, including singing with the English National Ballet at Covent Garden, and winning the Wagner Prize. Her breadth of experience playing roles as diverse as Erda in Wagner's Ring Cycle, to the Witch in Humperdink's Hansel & Gretel speaks of her versatility. Her distinctive contralto timbre, and engaging stagecraft have resulted in Rhonda being sought after on both the operatic stage and concert platforms internationally. 

 

Rhonda is driven by her love of exploring a wide range of music, and experiencing the corresponding emotions evoked by the performance in both the audience and musicians alike.  She studies with Jacqueline Bremar.

 

Rhonda has performed the roles of Erda DAS RHEINGOLD/SIEGFRIED and Schwertleite DIE WALKÜRE for Longborough Festival Opera, Lady Bertram MANSFIELD PARK for Opera South, Baba the Turk RAKE’S PROGRESS for Bury Court Opera, Mistress Bentson LAKME for Swansea City Opera, Witch / Mother HÄNSEL UND GRETEL on a tour of the UK for Pop-Up Opera and with Iford Arts, Auntie PETER GRIMES with the Nottingham Philharmonic, The Duchess of Plaza Toro GONDOLIERS and Ludmila BARTERED BRIDE for Surrey Opera, The Witch HÄNSEL UND GRETEL for Open Door Opera and Opera in Space, Zia Principessa SUOR ANGELICA for Talent Unlimited and Giornata Opera, Zita GIANNI SCHICCHI for Fulham Opera, two staged productions of the MESSIAH for The Merry Opera Company and Rossweisse DIE WALKÜRE for the Mastersingers. She also created the role of Gudrun in the world Premiere of Coleridge Taylor’s THELMA for Surrey Opera. Rhonda has covered Erda RHEINGOLD and SIEGFRIED, Grimgerde and Schwertleite DIE WALKÜRE and First Norn GÖTTERDAMMERUNG for Opera North, First Norn and Flosshilde at Longborough Festival Opera, and Ulrica UN BALLO IN MASCHERA for Iford Arts Festival. 

 

Concert engagements include Mahler’s DAS LIED VON DER ERDE for English National Ballet at Royal Opera House, London Coliseum, Elgar’s SEA PICTURES with the Sheffield Symphony Orchestra, Wagner’s Wesendonck Lieder for Manukau Symphony Orchestra in Auckland as well as repertoire including Rossini’s PETITE MESSE SOLENELLE, Bach’s WEIHNACHTSORATORIUM, Vivaldi’s GLORIA, Mozart’s MISSA BREVIS and REQUIEM, Handel’s MESSIAH, Duruflé’s REQUIEM, Saint Saëns’ CHRISTMAS ORATORIO and in New Zealand, Germany and the UK. 

 

In tandem with developing her own work on the stage, Rhonda has cultivated a career in training the next generation of singing talent. She is passionate about working with voices undergoing change, and works with singers focusing on techniques that can be used across genres.
